Portugal have advanced to the knockout stages of the 2018 world cup after surviving a late surge by Iran to earn a 1-all draw.

The European champions found the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time, when Ricardo Quaresma launched a great shot in to the top-left corner from 18 yards out.

But Iran’s goalie, Alireza Beiranvand, saved Ronaldo’s low effort as he dived to his left to grab the ball. But that was not all, as Team Melli won a penalty in the injury time, and it was Karim Ansarifard who stepped up and converted the shot to make it 1 all.

Taremi had a great chance to make history and send Iran to the knock out stages of the tournament, but his close-range effort was not on Target. 1-1 the final score, which puts Iran 3rd in the group.
